Walking Across the Nine Arch Bridge

Ella
New

About this activity

Visit this stunning piece of colonial-era engineering, a massive stone bridge hidden amidst tea estates that was built entirely without the use of steel.

Located just a short hike from Ella town, the Nine Arch Bridge (also known as the "Bridge in the Sky") is a marvel of the British colonial period. Completed in 1921, it is constructed solely from bricks, stones, and cement. Standing 24 meters high and 91 meters long, the bridge spans a lush valley and is surrounded by dense jungle and tea bushes. Visitors can walk along the tracks and wait for the train to pass, which happens several times a day. The sight of the vintage locomotive steaming across the curved stone arches is one of the most photographed moments in Sri Lanka.
