Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)

Adam's Peak, locally known as Sri Pada, is a soaring, 2,243-meter conical mountain situated in the lush central highlands of Sri Lanka. It is one of the most uniquely revered pilgrimage sites in the world, holding deep spiritual significance for four major religions—Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians—who have been climbing its thousands of steps for over a millennium to pay homage to the sacred footprint at its summit.

• The Pilgrimage Trail: The most popular and well-maintained route begins in the small village of Nallathanniya (Dalhousie). The trek is a strenuous, continuous ascent comprising approximately 5,500 steep concrete and stone steps. During the official pilgrimage season, the entire path is brilliantly illuminated with a ribbon of lights that can be seen glowing from miles away, and the trail is bustling with small stalls selling hot tea, roti, and traditional sweets to energize weary climbers.

• The Sacred Footprint & Sunrise: The ultimate goal of the hike is to reach the small temple at the peak before dawn. Enclosed within the shrine is a 1.8-meter rock formation believed by Buddhists to be the footprint of the Buddha, by Hindus to be that of Shiva, and by Christians and Muslims to be that of Adam after being exiled from Eden. As the sun rises, it casts a perfect, mesmerizing triangular shadow of the mountain onto the surrounding mist-covered valleys.

• Navigation and Tips: The hike typically takes between 3 to 5 hours depending on your fitness level and the crowd density (which can be extreme on full moon Poya days and weekends). It is highly recommended to start your ascent around 1:30 AM to catch the sunrise. Temperatures at the summit drop dramatically before dawn, so carrying a warm windbreaker, a beanie, and a change of dry clothes is absolutely essential to stay comfortable while waiting for the sun to emerge.
