Anuradhapura is the first ancient capital of Sri Lanka and a sprawling UNESCO World Heritage site, serving as the powerful center of Sinhalese Buddhist civilization for over 1,300 years. Founded in the 4th century BCE, the city was once one of the most advanced, wealthy, and populated centers in the ancient world, renowned for its monumental stupas (dagobas), intricate stone carvings, and highly sophisticated irrigation reservoirs that still function today.
The Sacred Sites & Monuments: The archaeological complex is massive and divided into several monastic zones. Key highlights include the striking Ruwanwelisaya (a colossal, brilliant-white stupa), the brick-built Jetavanaramaya (which was once the third tallest structure in the ancient world, right behind the pyramids of Giza), and the beautifully preserved Kuttam Pokuna (Twin Ponds) that showcase incredible ancient hydrology and plumbing.
The Sri Maha Bodhi: At the spiritual heart of the city lies the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. This highly venerated sacred fig tree was grown from a sapling brought from the original Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Planted in 288 BCE, it is recognized as the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world planted by a human.
Navigation and Tips: Because the ruins are spread across many square kilometers, renting a bicycle or hiring a tuk-tuk for the day is the most practical way to get around. As it is a highly sacred city, the dress code is strictly enforced: shoulders and knees must be fully covered, and wearing white is respectfully preferred. You must remove your hats and shoes before stepping onto temple grounds, so packing a pair of thick, dark socks is absolutely essential to protect the soles of your feet from the scorching hot stone pathways in the sun.
