About this place

Located on the remote, sun-drenched eastern coast of Sri Lanka, Arugam Bay is internationally celebrated as the surfing capital of the country and consistently ranks among the top surf destinations in the world. While the southern beaches experience their monsoon season, Arugam Bay comes alive between May and September, offering a completely different seasonal dynamic for travelers. The bay boasts an incredibly relaxed, bohemian atmosphere that feels distinctively different from the rest of the island, drawing a dedicated community of surfers, backpackers, and adventure seekers.

The primary draw of Arugam Bay is its world-class point breaks. "Main Point," located right at the edge of the town, offers long, consistent right-handers that ride over a reef, providing thrilling barrels for advanced surfers. For intermediate riders and beginners, nearby spots like Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm, and Elephant Rock offer fantastic, less intimidating waves set against breathtaking natural backdrops. The surf culture here is deeply ingrained in the town's identity, with numerous surf camps, repair shops, and board rental shacks lining the single main road.

However, Arugam Bay is not exclusively for surfers. It serves as a fantastic gateway to some of Sri Lanka’s most untouched wilderness. Just a short drive south lies Kumana National Park, an incredible sanctuary renowned for its dense populations of migratory birds, wild elephants, and elusive leopards, offering a much quieter safari experience compared to the busy southern parks. In the evenings, the town transforms into a vibrant social hub, with beachside restaurants serving fresh seafood and lively bars hosting weekly parties. Combining elite surfing, rich wildlife, and an infectious charm, Arugam Bay is a must-visit destination.
