About this place

Ederagala Wana Senasuna (also frequently spelled Enderagala) is a deeply tranquil and relatively undiscovered ancient Buddhist forest monastery situated just a few kilometers outside the bustling town of Dambulla. While the massive crowds flock to the nearby Sigiriya Rock and Dambulla Cave Temple, this hidden gem offers a deeply peaceful, spiritual retreat surrounded by pristine nature. The name "Wana Senasuna" translates directly to "Forest Hermitage," perfectly describing the quiet, meditative atmosphere that has attracted monks for over two millennia.

  • Ancient Cave Origins: According to the ancient Brahmi inscriptions found carved into the drip-ledges of the caves, the history of this monastery stretches all the way back to the 2nd and 1st centuries BCE. Originally serving as a secluded meditative retreat for early Buddhist monks, the site seamlessly blends ancient rock-cut architecture with the natural jungle environment.

  • The Summit Stupa and Panoramic Views: The absolute highlight of Ederagala is the small, brilliant white stupa located at the very peak of the massive rocky outcrop. Reaching the summit requires a short but somewhat steep climb up carved stone steps and natural rock pathways. Once at the top, visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking, 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding emerald jungle. On a clear day, you get a completely unique, elevated perspective of both the Dambulla Cave Temple rock and the iconic Sigiriya Rock rising in the distance.

  • Navigation and Tips: Located directly off the main A6 highway, about 15 minutes from Dambulla or Sigiriya, it is incredibly easy to reach via a short tuk-tuk ride. Because this is an active, highly venerated hermitage where monks live and meditate, visitors must maintain absolute silence and dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered). You will need to remove your shoes before stepping onto the sacred upper terraces, so climbing during the cooler hours of the day is highly recommended to protect your feet from the sun-heated rock.
