Isurumuniya Temple

About this place

Isurumuniya is a profoundly serene and historically significant rock temple situated just south of the massive Tissa Wewa reservoir in the sacred city of Anuradhapura. Originally built by King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BCE, the temple complex was initially constructed as a monastic retreat to house 500 newly ordained children from noble families. Today, it is most celebrated not for massive stupas, but for its exquisite, ancient stone carvings that offer a rare glimpse into the secular art of early Sri Lanka.

  • The Isurumuniya Lovers: Housed within the site's small museum, this 6th-century Gupta-style bas-relief is arguably the most famous romantic sculpture in Sri Lankan history. It depicts a man and a woman in a loving, coy embrace. Local folklore widely believes the figures represent Prince Saliya (the son of the great King Dutugemunu) and Asokamala, a beautiful maiden from a lower caste. According to legend, the prince famously renounced his right to the throne to marry her.

  • The Elephant Pond and Rock Carvings: The temple is built around a picturesque cleft in the natural rock, featuring a tranquil lotus pond. Carved directly into the rock face just above the water level are highly realistic depictions of bathing elephants, seemingly playing in the water. Further up the rock is another mysterious and debated carving of a regal man seated next to the head of a horse, which many historians believe represents Parjanya, the ancient Rain God.

  • Navigation and Tips: Reaching the summit of the rock requires a short climb up a series of stone steps, rewarding visitors with a spectacular, sweeping view over the Tissa Wewa and the surrounding ancient city canopy. Because it is an active place of worship, modest dress is strictly required (shoulders and knees covered), and footwear must be removed at the entrance. The serene atmosphere makes it a perfect, quieter counterpoint to the towering brick dagobas found elsewhere in Anuradhapura.
