Lake Gregory, officially known as Gregory Reservoir, is a breathtaking 225-acre man-made lake located right in the heart of Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka's "Little England." Constructed in 1873 under the orders of British Governor Sir William Gregory, the area was originally a swamp at the foot of small hills. Today, it stands as the central hub for water sports, outdoor activities, and family recreation in the misty highlands, perfectly complementing the colonial charm of the surrounding town.
Recreation and Water Sports: The lake is highly equipped for outdoor fun. Visitors can rent brightly colored, swan-shaped pedal boats, classic rowboats, or thrilling jet skis to explore the calm waters. The paved pathway encircling the lake is extremely popular for jogging and cycling, and visitors can easily hire bicycles near the main entrances.
Gregory Park and Picnics: The manicured lawns of Gregory Park running alongside the lake offer an idyllic setting for family picnics. The park features a small amusement area for children, numerous food stalls selling hot Sri Lankan snacks and Ceylon tea, and even offers brief pony rides along the grassy banks.
Navigation and Tips: The lake is centrally located and easy to reach via a short walk or tuk-tuk ride from the Nuwara Eliya town center. As the weather in the hill country can be highly unpredictable, carrying a light rain jacket or sweater is highly recommended, even if the sun is out. The area becomes incredibly crowded and festive during the April New Year season, so plan accordingly if you prefer a quieter, more peaceful visit.
