The Mirisawetiya Stupa is an ancient and immensely significant Buddhist monument located within the sacred city of Anuradhapura. Constructed by the great warrior King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BCE (between 161 and 137 BCE) after his victory over the South Indian King Elara, it holds a profound place in Sri Lankan history. Standing at approximately 59 meters (192 feet) tall, the brilliant white stupa provides a deeply serene atmosphere for meditation and is recognized as one of the Atamasthana (the eight sacred places of Anuradhapura).
The Legend of the Scepter: According to the ancient chronicles, the stupa was built on the exact spot where King Dutugemunu planted his royal scepter (kunta) before bathing in the nearby Tissa Wewa reservoir. The scepter famously contained a sacred relic of the Lord Buddha. After his bath, the king discovered that the scepter was miraculously rooted to the earth and could not be moved by anyone. Interpreting this as a divine sign, he ordered a magnificent stupa to be built enclosing the scepter.
The Chili Curry Atonement: The unique name "Mirisawetiya" stems from another famous local legend. King Dutugemunu had made a solemn vow to always offer a portion of his meals to the Buddhist monks (Sangha) before eating. However, on one occasion, he accidentally consumed a spicy chili (miris) curry without making the customary offering. As an act of deep penance and atonement for breaking his vow, he built this massive dagoba and dedicated it to the monastery.
Navigation and Tips: Located just west of the main city and close to the Tissa Wewa, Mirisawetiya is often quieter and less crowded than the neighboring Ruwanweliseya. As it is an active religious site, the standard strict dress code applies: shoulders and knees must be fully covered, and white clothing is preferred. You must remove your shoes before entering the sacred sandy courtyard (Weli Maluwa) and the paved stone terrace (Salapathala Maluwa), so carrying a pair of thick, dark socks is highly recommended to protect your feet from the hot stones.
