About this place

Rankoth Vehera, which translates to the "Golden Pinnacled Stupa," is a towering, magnificent brick monument located within the UNESCO World Heritage city of Polonnaruwa. Constructed in the late 12th century (between 1187 and 1196 AD) by King Nissanka Malla, it proudly stands as the largest stupa in Polonnaruwa and the fourth largest in all of Sri Lanka. Built entirely of brick in the traditional Sinhalese "bubble shape" (bubbulakara), its design was heavily inspired by the revered Ruwanwelisaya in Anuradhapura, signifying a continuation of ancient architectural traditions.

  • Architectural Scale: The sheer size of Rankoth Vehera is awe-inspiring. Today, it stands at an impressive height of roughly 33 meters (108 feet) with a massive base circumference of 170 meters (550 feet), though historians estimate its original height may have approached 60 meters before centuries of natural wear and later renovations. The stupa is set upon a large, square stone terrace with four entrances aligned to the cardinal directions, featuring four prominent Vahalkadas (ornate ritual platforms used for floral offerings).

  • Historical Evidence: Near one of the entrances, visitors can find an ancient stone inscription left by King Nissanka Malla himself. The inscription details his supervision of the stupa's construction and notes the small platform in the corner of the terrace where he would sit to worship the monument. While it is now mostly exposed red brick, the name suggests that its pinnacle was once brilliantly gilded in gold.

  • Navigation and Tips: Exploring Rankoth Vehera and the surrounding Alahana Pirivena monastic complex involves a fair amount of walking on sandy paths. As it is an active and highly sacred Buddhist site, modest dress is strictly required—shoulders and knees must be fully covered. You will also need to remove your shoes before stepping onto the sacred terrace; because the sand and stone can become blisteringly hot under the tropical sun, bringing a pair of thick, dark socks is highly recommended for a comfortable visit.
