About this place

Ranmasu Uyana, meaning "Goldfish Park," is a spectacular ancient pleasure garden spanning approximately 40 acres in the sacred city of Anuradhapura. Situated harmoniously between the massive Tissa Wewa reservoir and the Isurumuniya rock temple, this sprawling royal park dates back to the 3rd century BCE during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa. It is celebrated as one of the finest and most meticulously preserved examples of pre-Christian Sri Lankan garden architecture, originally designed as an exclusive, luxurious retreat for Sinhalese royalty.

  • Advanced Hydraulics and Royal Baths: The garden is globally renowned for its incredibly sophisticated ancient water management system. Early Sri Lankan engineers brilliantly utilized subtle pressure differences to channel fresh water directly from the nearby Tissa Wewa into a series of exquisitely stone-carved bathing ponds and swimming pools. These baths are beautifully ornamented with detailed relief sculptures, including depictions of elephants playfully splashing among lotus blooms.

  • The Mysterious 'Star Gate' (Sakwala Chakraya): Hidden among the park's natural boulders is the highly intriguing Star Gate - Ranmasu Uyana Click to open side panel for more information , locally known as the Sakwala Chakraya ("Universe Cycle"). Carved onto a sheer granite rock face, this enigmatic 1.8-meter circular diagram features concentric rings, geometric divisions, and an outer band depicting marine life. Its exact purpose remains one of Sri Lanka's greatest historical mysteries; theories range from it being an ancient cosmological map of the universe or a visual aid for deep Vipassana meditation, to more speculative fringe beliefs of it being an extraterrestrial portal.

  • Navigation and Tips: Exploring the shaded, boulder-strewn paths of Ranmasu Uyana provides a deeply peaceful and naturally beautiful contrast to the towering brick stupas found in the main archaeological zones. The park is heavily shaded by ancient trees, but wearing comfortable walking shoes and carrying a light mosquito repellent is highly advisable. According to deeply cherished local legend, it was within the romantic setting of this very garden that Prince Saliya, the son of the great King Dutugemunu, met and famously gave up his right to the throne for Asokamala, a beautiful maiden of a lower caste.
