Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya is a sprawling 147-acre sanctuary and easily the most renowned botanical garden in Sri Lanka. Originally established as a royal pleasure garden for the Kandyan kings centuries ago, the site was officially converted into a botanical garden by the British in 1821. Nestled within a sweeping bend of the mighty Mahaweli River, it is famous worldwide for its staggering collection of over 4,000 plant species, including a wealth of medicinal plants, spices, and towering palms.

• The Orchid House: One of the absolute highlights of the gardens is the exquisite National Orchid House. This meticulously maintained greenhouse displays an astonishing variety of both endemic and exotic orchids in full, vibrant bloom, offering a paradise for macro-photography enthusiasts and botanists alike.

• Monumental Trees and Avenues: As you wander the expansive lawns, you will encounter the magnificent Avenue of Royal Palms, an incredibly photogenic pathway lined with towering, perfectly symmetrical palm trees. The garden's most famous single resident, however, is the colossal giant Javan fig tree. Planted over a century ago, its massive, tentacle-like roots spread out horizontally to create a natural, living canopy that covers nearly 2,500 square meters.

• Navigation and Tips: The gardens are vast, so expect to spend at least 2 to 3 hours here to fully appreciate the different zones, including the spice garden, the bamboo fringe, and the suspension bridge stretching over the river. If you prefer not to walk the entire distance, there are electric golf carts (buggies) available for rent near the entrance. The paved walkways are very flat and accessible, making it an ideal, relaxing stopover before diving into the busier cultural sites of central Kandy.
