About this place

St. Clair's Falls is one of the widest and most celebrated waterfalls in Sri Lanka, affectionately known as the "Little Niagara of Sri Lanka." Plunging through the incredibly lush, emerald-green tea bushes of the St. Clair Tea Estate in the Nuwara Eliya District, this breathtaking natural monument is an iconic landmark of the central highlands. The cascade is actually composed of two distinct drops along the Kotmale Oya river: the 80-meter-high "Maha Ella" (The Greater Fall) and the 50-meter-high "Kuda Ella" (The Lesser Fall).

  • The "Little Niagara" & Hydropower Impact: Ranked as the 20th highest waterfall on the island, its massive 50-meter width gives it its famous nickname. In recent years, the natural water volume was impacted by the Upper Kotmale Hydropower Project. To preserve the waterfall's beauty, the government ensures a regulated flow of water is released daily over the falls for 10.5 hours during the daytime.

  • The Viewing Experience: Unlike many waterfalls that require grueling jungle treks, St. Clair's Falls offers exceptional accessibility. It is beautifully visible directly from the winding A7 highway connecting Hatton to Nuwara Eliya. There is a dedicated roadside viewpoint that provides magnificent, unobstructed panoramic views of the water crashing down the rock face against the vibrant tea plantation backdrop.

  • Navigation and Tips: While access directly to the base of the waterfall or the natural pools is strictly prohibited for safety reasons, visitors can take short, leisurely walks down the pathways running through the tea estate to get a closer perspective. The area is highly photogenic, so keep your camera ready. It is highly recommended to pair this stop with the equally stunning Devon Falls, located just a couple of kilometers further down the road.
