Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi

Anuradhapura

About this place

The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is arguably the most profoundly sacred and venerated living monument in Sri Lanka. Situated securely within the Mahamevnawa Gardens of Anuradhapura, this majestic sacred fig tree (Ficus religiosa) holds the extraordinary distinction of being the oldest living human-planted tree in the world with a continuously documented history. It stands not just as a botanical marvel, but as the pulsating spiritual heart of Sri Lankan Buddhism.

  • The Sacred Origins: The tree's profound significance lies in its direct, verifiable lineage. In 288 BCE, the venerable Sanghamitta Theri—the daughter of the great Indian Emperor Ashoka and the sister of Mahinda Thero (who introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka)—brought a southern branch of the original Bodhi tree from Bodh Gaya, India. This was the exact tree under which Siddhartha Gautama attained supreme enlightenment. It was planted in its current location by King Devanampiyatissa.

  • The Protective Terraces: Over the millennia, ancient kings and modern devotees have constructed multiple ornate terraces and protective walls around the tree. Today, the main Bodhi tree is situated on the highest terrace (Udamaluwa), heavily guarded by golden railings and supported by golden crutches. It is surrounded by several younger, protective Bodhi trees known as "Parivara Bodhi," which shield the ancient core tree from severe weather, monkeys, and lightning strikes.

  • Navigation and Tips: As the ultimate pilgrimage site in the country, the atmosphere is deeply moving, filled with the soft chanting of devotees clad in white and the heavy fragrance of lotus and jasmine flowers. The dress code is extremely strict: shoulders and knees must be fully covered, and wearing white is highly encouraged. You must remove your hats and shoes before entering the temple compound. Because the sand can get blisteringly hot during the day, it is highly recommended to wear thick, dark socks.
