About this place

Jethawanaramaya is a staggering marvel of ancient engineering and devotion located within the sacred city of Anuradhapura. Built in the 3rd century CE by King Mahasen, this monumental complex was once the third-tallest structure in the ancient world, surpassed only by the Great Pyramids of Giza. At its peak, it served as a primary seat of the Sagalika sect, housing thousands of monks within a sprawling monastic city.

The centerpiece of the complex is the Jethawana Stupa, a massive dome of baked brick that stands as the largest of its kind ever constructed. Original estimates suggest it reached a height of over 400 feet (122 meters), though today it stands at approximately 232 feet.

The sheer scale of the engineering is mind-boggling; it is estimated that roughly 93 million clay bricks were used in its construction. The foundation is equally impressive, reaching deep into the bedrock to support the immense weight of the structure, showcasing the sophisticated structural knowledge of ancient Sri Lankan builders.

Surrounding the stupa are the remains of a vast monastery that once covered nearly 200 acres. Key highlights within the ruins include:

  • The Image House (Patimaghara): This structure houses the remains of a giant limestone Buddha statue. The entrance is flanked by two massive monolithic stone pillars that give a sense of the building's original grandeur.

  • The Refectory: A large stone "rice boat" (Kanda Oruwa) can still be seen here, which was used to serve meals to the thousands of resident monks.

  • The Museum: Located on-site, the Jethawana Museum displays a treasure trove of artifacts discovered during excavations, including Roman and Indian coins, intricate jewelry made of semi-precious stones, and fine ceramics, proving that Anuradhapura was a major hub for international trade.

Navigation and Tips

Jethawanaramaya is centrally located within the Anuradhapura Ancient City, making it easily accessible by bicycle, tuk-tuk, or car from the town center.

  • Footwear: Much like Sithulpawwa, the vast stone courtyards can become incredibly hot under the tropical sun. It is highly recommended to wear thick socks to protect your feet while walking on the sand and stone surrounding the stupa.

  • Dress Code: As a living place of worship, modest attire is mandatory (shoulders and knees covered). White clothing is the traditional choice for pilgrims and helps keep you cool.

  • Timing: The best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon. This allows you to avoid the midday heat and witness the bricks of the stupa glow with a deep, earthy red during the "golden hour" before sunset.
