Chasing the Sun: Why Sri Lanka's East Coast is Your Perfect Summer Escape

If you are planning a trip to Sri Lanka between May and September, you might look at the weather forecast for popular spots like Galle or Mirissa and feel a little panicked by the rain icons. Do not worry! Sri Lanka has a unique, split monsoon system. When the south and west coasts get wet and windy, the East Coast turns into an absolute sun-drenched paradise.

As a travel blogger based right here in the Central Province, I always tell visitors that summer is the perfect time to pack up and head east. The East Coast of Sri Lanka offers a completely different vibe than the south. It is more rustic, a little more laid-back, and boasts some of the most pristine, untouched beaches in the Indian Ocean.

Here is your expert guide to chasing the sun and exploring the absolute best of Sri Lanka’s East Coast this summer.

The Surf and Turf Capital: Arugam Bay

Located on the southeast coast, Arugam Bay (affectionately known as "A-Bay") is the undisputed surfing capital of Sri Lanka. From May to September, the offshore winds create world-class right-hand point breaks that draw surfers from all over the globe.

What to Expect

Even if you have never touched a surfboard, Arugam Bay is worth the trip. The town is basically one long road running parallel to the beach, lined with bohemian cafes, reggae bars, and relaxed guesthouses. The vibe here is wonderfully slow. You wake up early, grab a smoothie bowl, watch the surfers at Main Point, and spend the afternoon lounging in a hammock.

Top Things to Do

  • Surf at Elephant Rock: This is a stunning, slightly secluded surf spot located a short tuk-tuk ride from town. It is great for beginners and offers an incredible vantage point for sunset watching.

  • Spot Wild Elephants: Arugam Bay is surrounded by untamed jungle. You do not even need to book a safari to see wildlife; it is highly common to see wild elephants casually grazing by the roadside just outside of town.

  • Visit Kumana National Park: Located just an hour south of A-Bay, this park is less crowded than Yala and is famous for its massive flocks of migratory birds, alongside leopards and elephants.

The Pristine Marine Wonderland: Trincomalee & Nilaveli

If you head further north along the coast, you will hit the historic port city of Trincomalee and the nearby resort strip of Nilaveli. The sand here is powder-white, and the ocean is a striking, crystal-clear turquoise. It is the perfect destination for marine lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

What to Expect

Trincomalee feels vast and deeply cultural. The streets are dotted with roaming deer and colorful Hindu temples. Nilaveli, located about 30 minutes north of Trinco town, is where you go when you want to truly disconnect. It is quieter, featuring wide, empty stretches of beach that make you feel like you have the island to yourself.

Top Things to Do

  • Snorkel at Pigeon Island: A short boat ride from Nilaveli beach takes you to this incredible marine national park. It is one of the only places in Sri Lanka where you can easily snorkel with harmless blacktip reef sharks and sea turtles right off the beach.

  • Go Whale Watching: From March through August, the deep waters off the coast of Trincomalee become a feeding ground for majestic blue whales and sperm whales.

  • Visit Koneswaram Temple: Perched on a massive cliff overlooking the ocean, this vibrant, ancient Hindu temple offers some of the most breathtaking coastal views in the country.

The Ultimate Family Retreat: Pasikudah and Kalkudah

Sitting roughly halfway between Arugam Bay and Trincomalee are the twin bays of Pasikudah and Kalkudah. If you are traveling with young children, or if you simply want a luxury resort experience with calm waters, this is your spot.

What to Expect

Pasikudah is famous for its uniquely shallow bay. The water here is protected by an offshore reef, meaning there are virtually no waves. You can walk out into the ocean for hundreds of meters, and the warm, bath-like water will barely reach your waist.

Top Things to Do

  • Swim in Safety: The primary draw here is the ocean itself. It is arguably the safest swimming beach on the entire island, perfect for floating the day away.

  • Walk the Empty Sands of Kalkudah: While Pasikudah is lined with high-end resorts, the neighboring bay of Kalkudah remains wild, undeveloped, and completely empty. It is a stunning contrast and a great place for a quiet morning walk.

Essential East Coast Travel Tips

To make your summer escape seamless, keep these practical logistics in mind:

  1. The Journey Takes Time: The East Coast is further away from the main international airport in Colombo. Expect a 6 to 8-hour drive depending on whether you are heading to Trincomalee or Arugam Bay. Break up the trip by spending a few days in the Cultural Triangle or the Hill Country (like Ella or Kandy) along the way.

  2. Take the Night Mail Train: If you are heading to Trincomalee from Colombo, the overnight sleeper train is a classic, budget-friendly, and adventurous way to travel. You fall asleep in the city and wake up to the sunrise over the eastern coast.

  3. Pack Light and Breathable: The East Coast is significantly drier and hotter than the rest of the island during these months. Pack plenty of lightweight linen, coral-safe sunscreen, and a good hat.
